Kirstie Macleod, Creator of The Red Dress Project

Kirstie Macleod is the visionary behind The Red Dress Project, a global masterpiece that has connected thousands of people across the world over the past 16 years. What began as a simple sketch on the back of a napkin in 2009 has evolved into a breath-taking garment symbolizing identity, collaboration, and shared humanity.

Growing up immersed in the vibrant cultures, colours, and traditions of various countries, Kirstie’s early life was rich with diverse experiences. It was during these formative years, surrounded by skilled stitchers and makers in her family, that she discovered her passion for textiles. Her artistic journey took her to a BA in Textile Design, followed by an MA in Visual Language & Performance. From painting and photography to high-impact installations, Kirstie developed a multifaceted portfolio as a Fine Artist in London.

Her creative path eventually led her to embroidery, a medium she found to be profoundly expressive, meditative, and steeped in cultural history. A pivotal moment came in 2002 during her travels in southern India, where she stitched alongside Lambani women in Karnataka. Despite a language barrier, their shared act of embroidery created a powerful bond. This experience planted the seeds for The Red Dress, which Kirstie envisioned as a platform for storytelling, connection, and empowerment.

Since its inception, The Red Dress Project has brought together artisans from over 50 countries, each contributing intricate embroideries that reflect their personal stories, heritage, and culture. These individual pieces are stitched into a single stunning red gown—a tangible symbol of unity and shared humanity. The dress has served as a medium for connection, breaking down boundaries and amplifying voices from marginalized and underrepresented communities.

In a world facing challenges like war, inequality, and poverty, The Red Dress Project carries a vital message: collaboration and compassion can create lasting impact. For Kirstie, this project is not just about art—it’s about what we can achieve when we come together as a global community.

Kirstie Macleod’s remarkable work reminds us that creativity has the power to heal, inspire, and build bridges across divides. Don't miss the opportunity to meet this incredible artist at the show and hear the inspiring story behind The Red Dress.
