Explore the different Fabric techniques with Alison Whateley

Meet the Stars: Maria Maidment of Old Maid New

Alison is a contemporary textile and mixed media artist whose work explores both representational and abstract forms inspired by the natural world. Working primarily with textiles, she uses a variety of techniques along with other mediums to create richly textured, expressive pieces. She exhibits widely across the UK and runs an extensive programme of workshops from her studio just outside Exeter. In 2024, she appeared on Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year, and in 2025 she was elected an Academician of the South West Academy of Fine & Applied Arts (SWAc). She is also a member of the Devon Artist Network and the Society for Embroidered Work.

Visit this exhibitor’s stand for a live look at fabric manipulation and mixed-media textiles, with demonstrations running throughout the show. You’ll see how to use a Gelli plate to create a range of prints and effects on different fabrics, plus techniques for applying acrylic paint on fabric and building depth with texture mediums.

They’ll also be sharing practical stitching ideas to bring surfaces to life, including free-motion machine stitching and hand embroidery, ideal if you’re looking to add detail, texture, and personality to your textile projects.
